Toyota Hilux buffs up to compete with Ranger Raptor

The Ford Ranger is mere days away from getting a high-end variant called the Raptor, which is going to offer considerably more than the current 215 PS (212 hp / 2158 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque. To make sure it stays at least somewhat competitive, Toyota has now muscled up its Hilux pickup.

In fact, the new Hilux GR Sport is currently only available in South Africa. It is possible that a similar version will appear on other markets later on, but that’s it for now. While the standard Hilux produces 200 PS (197 hp / 147 kW) with its most powerful diesel engine, the new GR Sport makes 224 PS (221 hp / 165 kW) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque.

The Japanese carmaker does not mention any specifics, but we would imagine the boost to be possible via a relatively simple ECU tune. As for the Ford Ranger Raptor, it is expected to borrow the drivetrain from the new Bronco Raptor rated above 406 PS (400 hp / 300 kW).
