Toyota has brought a Hilux Hybrid to a rally event in the Republic of Kenya. While it is still technically a prototype, the truck is scheduled for release in Australia and South Africa in early 2024, Paultan reports.
The company neglected to mention the type of the hybrid drivetrain used, but everything indicates a mild-hybrid system based on a 48V starter-generator. Although not as efficient as a plug-in hybrid, such a configuration may still reduce fuel consumption by around 10%.
It is assumed that the main engine will be a 2.8-liter turbo diesel mated to a six-speed A/T for 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW). The electric starter will increase that output by a small fraction.
Toyota believes that mild hybrids are optimal for African markets where charging stations are few and far between even in the most developed districts. Increasing the popularity of such hybrids there may reduce harmful emissions. Going forward, the company may electrify its Fortuner SUV in the same manner.
