Toyota Hilux runs tests on hydrogen power

The UK-based office of Toyota has previewed a Hilux prototype running on hydrogen has. 10 such experimental vehicles will be made for tests, which will begin later this year.

The new powertrain is based on the standard Hilux chassis. It has a traction battery next to the rear axle and three hydrogen tanks inside the frame between the axles. The rest of the system is under the hood.

Toyota has not revealed any specifications, but said that the components were carried over from the Mirai sedan. With its tanks full, the truck should have up to 590 kilometers, or 366 miles, of range.

The road tests are necessary for the automaker to determine how safe and how viable such fuel-cell-based EVs are for the mass market.
