Toyota has begun testing a hydrogen-powered Hilux truck in Great Britain. It was designed by the corporation’s local branch based on the Mirai sedan powertrain.
The eco-friendly Hilux seen here draws its power from three hydrogen tanks installed between the side members of the fame. They can store up to 7.8 kilograms (17.2 lbs) of hydrogen gas, which is enough for 600 km (372 miles) of range. An electrochemical generator sitting under the hood supplies electricity to a single electric motor driving the wheels with 182 PS (180 hp / 134 kW).
The company plans to continue testing this powertrain in a dozen of pickups until the end of the year. Despite the fading popularity of EVs, Toyota still hopes that the European Union can become a major consumer of fuel cell vehicles by the start of the next decade.
