Toyota has posted the first image of its next-gen Innova minivan for India and Indonesia. The vehicle shares the rugged aesthetic with its predecessor, but benefits from a new platform and engines, as well as an updated design. Autocar India is reporting that a full-fledged premiere is expected next month.
While the past generation (see video) was built on the Hilux pickup chassis and a ladder frame, the new Innova utilizes the unitized TNGA-C architecture. This means it no longer has a frame, relying instead on the body to withstand all the load. In addition to it, the minivan will no longer ship with diesel engines, leaving customers to decide between gasoline and hybrid drivetrains. Finally yet importantly, the drive moves from the rear axle to the front one.
The unitized construction will unlock a number of new technologies, including previously unavailable electronic assist systems. The manufacturer claims the overall driving comfort will be markedly improved as well.
It is assumed that the roughly 4.7-meter-long MPV will have 2.85 meters of space between the axles. It will likely continue to ship with three seat rows, but we wouldn’t be surprised if other layouts were made available, too.
In India, the updated model will be called Innova Hycross. In Indonesia, it will be known as the Innova Zenix. Automaker Maruti Suzuki will also produce a version under its own branding.
