Toyota is working on the next generation of its legendary Land Cruiser SUV, the 300. While most of the specs remain a matter of speculation, some things are already official.
The main question that the fans of the model keep asking is, will the 300 get to keep its V8 engine range and body-on-frame design? Well, the first one is a firm ‘no’: V6 is as good as it will get. If we are lucky, the automotive giant will produce a flagship version based on the 3.4-liter turbocharged V6 mill of the Lexus LS500, rated at 421 hp (314 kW). A hybrid powertrain based on a Lexus engine is confirmed, and Toyota says it will benefit from transmission improvements, but no specific numbers are available.
The body-on-frame question also hangs in the air, and it is worth noting that most other manufacturers have already dropped such cars completely out of the lineup in favor if unitized body design.
The Japanese carmaker assures us that, no matter what, the SUV will keep its superb off-road qualities and be just as reliable as its predecessor was. It will also get an advanced self-driving tech and a new assortment of safety systems.
The launch timeframe for the Toyota Land Cruiser 300 remains a complete mystery. Its design is also unknown, so what you see in the gallery here are unofficial 3D images.
It is also worth noting that the Land Cruiser 200 still sells extremely well, despite being in production since 2007.
