Toyota spruces up the elderly Land Cruiser 70 for Australia

The Toyota Land Cruiser 70 has been in production for 36 long years now, but don’t go insulting it with hints of impending retirement: in Australia, the model has just received another youth injection.

The main difference from the older model (see video) can be found in the cabin. The new multimedia system now boasts a 6.1-inch screen, and there are a few added USB ports, a 12V DC outlet, and a cup holder for the front passenger. The infotainment itself is neither advanced nor modern, lacking even such basics as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and digital FM radio.

Things stay stock under the hood as well, where a 4.5-liter diesel V8 pumps out 205 hp (152 kW) and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft) of torque through manual transmission. In Australia, the Land Cruiser 70 range incorporates a three-door SUV, its five-door cousin, and two pickups (single-cab and double-cab). Prices begin from 67,400 AUD.

The venerable age of the truck does little to diminish its popularity, as evidenced by over 10,000 vehicles sold in 2019 alone.
