Elderly Toyota Land Cruiser becomes an exemplary restomod

Many off-roading enthusiasts still have tender feelings towards the Land Cruiser FJ40, but finding one in decent condition is no longer easy nowadays. Leyton Car’s Classics got a hold of one 40-year-old example and restored it to its former glory.

There is no missing the restomod on the road thanks to its eye-catching paint scheme: military-green metal goes side-by-side with shrill orange roof and interior. Both bumpers, the grille and the lighting all around are new, and the car has an air jack for those tricky off-road situations. A Warn winch rated for 3.6 metric tons (8,000 lbs) is also provided.

This is not all, though. The leaf-spring suspension has also been completely overhauled, the body lifted by approximately 60 mm (2.4 inches), and rotor brakes were installed on the front axle.

Projects like this one usually involve an engine swap, but Leyton Car’s Classics opted for a general maintenance of the original 4.2-liter naturally aspirated inline-six engine. Once done, the unit continued to churn out its typical 147 PS (145 hp / 108 kW) and 312 Nm (230 lb-ft) of torque to the wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox.

The SUV, which is pristine with 364 km (226 miles) on the odo, comes with an asking price of $135,000.
