Japanese sculptors build the world’s lightest Land Cruiser… kind of

Looking at the picture in the header here, you might wonder whether the two Japanese men lifting a Toyota Land Cruiser 70 with their hands are top-grade wrestlers or something. Sculptor Masumi Yamaguchi, who made the car, freely admits it isn’t the case: it’s just that the whole thing is made of featherweight Styrofoam.

The Land Cruiser 70 has recently returned to the domestic market after a long hiatus, making many brand fans excited for it – Yamaguchi among them. To celebrate, he sculpted a life-size replica of the SUV out of several large Styrofoam blocks.

The video details the entire creation process. As you can see, the master was able to reproduce the original car with great precision, including its bodywork creases, the radiator grille pattern, the design of the alloy wheels and even the tire treads.

To round off the job, he finished the replica in the Cruiser’s traditional light beige color, taking care to offset all plastic parts in black. Your eyesight doesn’t have to be bad to mistake the mockup for the real thing from just several meters. The lack of metallic sheen on the lacquer is perhaps the biggest giveaway, but only in certain lighting.

We were unable to find how much the thing weighs, but there’s no denying the effort that went into it is impressive.
