Land Cruiser Prado paints itself black to counter turning grey with age

Toyota announced a limited run of its Land Cruiser Prado called the 70th Anniversary Edition last year, just before the next-gen Cruiser came out (see video). But while the elderly Prado SUV has yet to transition into its next generation, customers in Japan may opt for a mild refresh called Matte Black Edition.

As you can guess from the name, the spin-off offers nothing new in terms of tech and simply blacks out a number of exterior components instead, including the front grille, the lights, the roof and the rear end. It rides on 18-inch six-spoke aluminum wheels also finished in the titular color.

Having been introduced in 2010, the Land Cruiser Prado is in a dire need of a major update, falling behind the competition in just about all aspects. Toyota has not made any announcements so far, though.

The Land Cruiser Prado Matte Black Edition will go on sale in white and black body colors with no other options. Customers will be able to choose between a diesel engine with 202 PS (199 hp / 149 kW) and a petrol one with 164 PS (162 hp / 121 kW). Prices will start from ¥4,300,000.
