2nd-gen Toyota Mirai revealed with more range and new features

Toyota has unveiled the final design of its hydrogen-powered sedan, the Mirai. The second generation looks nearly identical to the concept unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show last year (see video).

The newcomer utilizes the TNGA platform and sports 140 mm (5.5 inches) of added wheelbase, as well as 70 mm (2.75 inches) of added width. As such, it is 4,975 mm (16.32 ft.) long, 1,885 mm (6.18 ft.) wide and 1,470 mm (4.82 ft.) tall with 2,920 mm (9.58 ft.) separating the axles. This translates into a more spacious interior, and a new three-seater sofa at the rear promises even more legroom than the two individual seats offered in the first generation.

From the technical point of view, the 2021 Toyota Mirai still packs three hydrogen tanks, but their volume has increased and the individual cells redesigned for efficiency. As a result, the available range has increased by almost 30 percent to 650 kilometers (404 miles).

Crack open the door to see a new dashboard, a 12.3-inch display tilted towards the driver, a wireless phone charger, and a gear joystick sitting in place of the old selector.

The original Toyota Mirai emerged in 2014 and has sold around 10,000 copies since. The company hopes to push the new Mirai to the market later this year. As an aside, the environmentally clean hydrogen car is actually more popular in the United States than Europe, with around 1,700 units sold there in 2018 against mere 160 in the Old World countries.
