Researchers have built and launched the experimental boat in 2017 to test the efficiency and viability of various eco-friendly power sources; now, it additionally sports the hydrogen powertrain of the Toyota Mirai.
The twin-hull vessel started its journey with equipped large solar panels, two wind power generators, a couple electric motors and anĀ electrolytic converter. Thanks to Toyota joining the project in 2018, it received a hydrogen engine taken straight out of a Mirai sedan (watch the video for an overview).
The engine has successfully passed the preliminary tests and is now being evaluated for efficiency in the open waters. Once the testing period is complete (it should be by the end of the month), the Energy Observer will continue its journey.
