Toyota Mirai Mk2 set for USA launch in December

Toyota has announced the impending sales launch of its second-gen Mirai hydrogen car in the United States next month, along with revealing some specs and details.

The first generation is still available for purchase in Hawaii and California priced at U.S. $58,550. The new Mirai has not one, but two trim versions, XLE and Limited. The base XLE spec offers an infotainment system with a 12.3-inch touchscreen display and support for Amazon Alexa, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as sun-blocking curtains for the rear seat passengers, an eight-inch digital dashboard, and a JBL audio system with a subwoofer, an amp and 14 speakers. The list also includes a wireless gadget charger and the entire Toyota Safety System 2.5+ package, which incorporates the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) feature now capable of enhanced recognition of pedestrians and cyclists even on intersections and in the dark. A climate control system rounds off the list with a choice between two or three active zones.

The RWD luxury sedan is 4,975 mm (16.32 feet) long, 1,885 mm (6.18 feet) wide and 1,470 mm (4.82 feet) tall with 2,920 mm (9.58 feet) between the front and the rear wheels. It cones with 20-inch wheels and five body colors to choose from: Black, Oxygen White, Hydro Blue, Heavy Metal, and Supersonic Red.

Tech-wise, the electrochemical generator now sits under the hood, rather than under the front seats, and produces 174 PS (172 hp / 128 kW) instead of the previous 155 PS (153 hp / 114 kW). The electric motor now drives the rear axle instead of the front one and gains a boost from 154 PS (152 hp / 113 kW) to 182 PS (179 hp / 134 kW). The torque stays capped at 300 Nm (221 lb-ft), a slight downgrade from the former 335 Nm (247 lb-ft). The range now amounts to approximately 530 miles (850 km), a considerable bump from the former 400 miles (650 km).

The second-gen Toyota Mirai should launch simultaneously in the United States, Japan and Europe. The car only has two direct competitors on the North American market, specifically the Hyundai Nexo SUV starting from $58,735 and the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell sedan only available on lease.
