Toyota Great Britain has posted an interesting video featuring an RC car with 2nd-gen Mirai looks. Just like its source of inspiration, the 1:10 replica runs on hydrogen, and has a whole toy village built to the same scale to ride around.
The company says it designed a new powertrain specifically for the RC car, including a couple of electric motors, an electrochemical generator, a controller, and two small hydrogen tanks mounted at the sides of the chassis. Bramble Energy handles the development, while famous RC car maker Tamiya produced the chassis. The body was a one-off factory order.
We don’t know how fast the 20W model is, but the company claims that using hydrogen instead of conventional fuel cells has approximately doubled the efficient range.
There are no plans to sell such toys in stores in the foreseeable future, though. Toyota sued the replica to film an ad praising the versatility and high performance of fuel cells. The filming took place at The Old New Inn Model Village, a museum complex in Gloucestershire County, England housing a scale model of a small English town from the 1930s.
