Mid-engined Toyota MR2 smashes through 1,100 HP

Here’s an interesting fact: the Toyota MR2 Coupe (prod. 1984–2007) was Japan’s first mass-produced mid-engine sports car. It ultimately proved too expensive to become an icon, but loyal fans continue improving it to this day.

On the outside, you can tell it’s not a stock car thanks to a huge tailpipe cut straight into the rear bumper between the taillights. Then there are the staggered wheels – slim ones on the front axle and ultra-wide ones at the rear end. But neither of the two mods lets you safely guess what goes under the hood.

What goes on there is a Honda K Series engine retrofitted with a brutal turbocharger for what was initially 850 PS (838 hp / 625 kW). The owner then raised the boost pressure to 42 psi and added a few other mods to get 1,054 PS (1,039 hp / 775 kW). Inspired by the success, he proceeded to raise the pressure to the current 48 psi, ending with more than 1,100 hp (810+ kW) hitting the wheels. Not every modern hypercar can rival this coupe from the 1980s!
