The Arial Nomad is an off-road-capable version of the Atom racer, and it packs plenty of potential for nearly $100,000. The Car Throttle team wanted to see how close they could come to imitating it at a tiny fraction of the cost.
A third-gen Toyota MR2 provided the basis for the conversion, and reportedly cost mere £100 ($140) to acquire in the UK. The tuners stripped it of most of its bodywork and cleaned out the cabin, too. Then they added a tubular roll cage, massive wheels with appropriate tires, and a special exhaust system.
The stock 1.8-liter inline-four with 140 PS (138 hp / 103 kW) and 170 Nm (125 lb-ft) of torque was allowed to stay under the hood. As you can see in the video, it still offers plenty of thrust off-road, certainly enough to have fun in a car weighing in under one metric ton (2,200 lbs).
