No one paid $25k for this Audi R8, because it’s an elderly Toyota in drag

An Audi R8 replica based on a 1993 Toyota MR2 went up on sale for $25,000 USD last week, but the bidding failed to cross $10,000.

In all likelihood, the creator of the car picked the MR2 as the donor vehicle thanks to its mid-engine layout. They tried to achieve a degree of plausibility by using an Audi front grille and side air intakes with signature vertical panels. Other exterior modifications included aftermarket taillights, dual exhaust tips, and ‘R8’ badges.

Open the door, and you will see new seats, a special trim on the dashboard and console, a vertical multimedia display, leather upholstery, and a bulky transmission tunnel. The dash gauges and the steering wheel are OEM, however, and the latter is on the right-hand side because it is a UK spec imported into the USA.

What lies under the hood remains undisclosed, other that the engine is naturally aspirated and hooks up with a manual transmission. In its stock form, the MR2 drivetrain is good for 156-180 metric horsepower (154-178 hp; 115-132 kW, respectively).
