The jury of the North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year award has named America’s best vehicles of the past year.
Toyota Prius and its high-power Prime modification outdid the competition in the light passenger car category. The jury board pointed out that, despite the controversial appearance of the latest Prius generation, it offers superb fuel economy and 64+ km (40+ miles) of all-electric range with a PHEV powertrain. This essentially eliminates the need for most city dwellers to ever visit the gas station. Honda Accord and Hyundai Ioniq 6 won honorary mentions this time around.
Ford’s F-Series Super Duty truck won in its own category owing to exceptional towing and load-bearing capacities and engine power. The NACTOY team also praised its well-appointed powertrain options (four in total), overall convenience and handling ease. Chevrolet Colorado and Silverado EV earned honorary mentions.
Kia EV9 became the past year’s best SUV. From the price standpoint alone, it offers the best seven-seater experience in its market segment and can successfully compete with other premium offerings from other automotive brands moving upmarket.
In the originally published short list, the EV9 ran against Genesis GV70 Electrified and Volvo EX30, but the latter dropped out due to a shipment delay, its place taken by Hyundai Kona.
