New RAV4 Hybrid does up to 1,300 km / 808 miles without refueling

Toyota has launched a new PHEV (plug-in hybrid) version of its RAV4 crossover in Japan. The car costs nearly twice as much as its gas-chugging counterpart, but makes up for it with its exceptionally high driving range.

Prices for the PHEV model range between 4.7 and 5.4 million Japanese Yen, which roughly corresponds to U.S. $43,500 – $49,100. The standard SUV starts from 2.6 million JPY, or $24,100.

The hybrid car uses a 2.5-liter gasoline engine and a single electric motor to deliver up to 306 horsepower (228 kilowatts) to the wheels. Getting from zero to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) is a matter of six seconds, and the electric range amounts to 95 kilometers (59 miles). Max out the fuel tank, and you should get up to 1,300 kilometers of uninterrupted driving (808 miles).

The equipment list notably mentions E-Four electric 4WD, Toyota’s latest smart torque distribution system. There is also a climate control system that you can control via smartphone app.

On the outside, the RAV4 PHEV sports a special Toyota badge on blue background, a differently styled radiator grille, and a charging port.
