Toyota recalls 280k cars in the USA over gearbox issues

Toyota’s latest recall campaign encompasses around 280,000 SUVs and trucks sold in the United States under Toyota and Lexus badges. In all affected vehicles, a rare transmission defect may cause the car to continue rolling forward when set to neutral.

Normally, drivers expect their car to sever the link between the engine and the wheels when set to neutral. However, the affected examples continue moving forward for at least some time after switching to N. Toyota has already admitted that it is a serious issue that could lead to accidents.

All Lexus LX 600, Toyota Sequoia and Toyota Tundra assembled since 2022 until present day with an Aisin ten-speed transmission are affected. The carmaker claims that the solution is as simple as updating the transmission control unit software.

Toyota has not released any data regarding injury or other incidents caused by the faulty box.
