This Toyota Supra drift car packs a V8, but could do better

Back in its prime time, the fourth generation of the Toyota Supra shipped with a 3.0 Toyota 2JZ V6 engine equipped with dual turbochargers. As such, it was initially capable of 320 hp (239 kW), but improved upon these figures considerably with a bit of tuning.

The Supra you can see here comes equipped with a specially adapted Toyota 1UZ V8 with four liters of displacement room. Too bad more doesn’t always equal better, and you’ll soon see why.

This particular vehicle began its life as a Formula Drift car in 2010. A few years ago, the team found a replacement for it and sold it to its tech manager and amateur drifter Kazuto Soon. Back then, it was a bit of a fashion thing to retrofit sports cars with V8s, so he proceeded to ditch the stock flat-6 for the Toyota 1UZ V8.

Now, the new engine isn’t all that bad. For instance, it can pump out the maximum possible torque anywhere between 2,000 and 6,000 RPM, which is a great thing for a drift car. It is also highly durable and reliable. On the other hand, its raw power output could be called lackluster at best. Watch the video, you’ll see what we mean.
