Rumor: Toyota Supra may ship with a BMW M inline-6 in Japan

The new Toyota Supra generation may be launched with a 3.0-liter, twin-turbo inline-six engine sourced from BMW in Japan, industry observers point out.

Markus Flasch, head of the Bavarian car manufacturer’s M department, said in a recent interview that fitting the new Supra with the BMW S58 six-cylinder mill, which generally produces over 500 horsepower (373 kilowatts), was a 'distinct possibility'.

He went on to point out that Toyota hasn’t contacted BMW with the corresponding request yet. Furthermore, he admitted he did not know whether the Japanese automotive giant was going to release a high-performance version of its flagship coupe anytime soon.

The 2020 Toyota Supra comes based on the same principal architecture and tech as the BMW Z4. It also borrows most of its constituent units and components from the Bavarian roadster.
