Toyota has announced an initiative called GR Heritage Parts, according to which it will resume production of certain spare parts and components fitting classical Supra sports cars. It targets two model generations: A70 (1986-1993) and A80 (1993-2002).
The company admits it cannot afford to produce the entire spectrum of parts, but will instead focus on the most demanded ones. In the case of the A70, this apparently means door handles, propeller shafts, fuel level indicators, door sealing, and badges. A80 owners will enjoy renewed access to brake boosters, headlights – and also door handles. The selection might look a bit odd, but Toyota claims none of these items have quality replacements on the market, and their rarity makes them worth producing.
On an interesting side note, Toyota additionally offers everyone interested to fill out a special form on its official website to let it know what other Supra parts may be needed. If any specific part gets enough votes, it may re-enter production, too.
The manufacturing process will begin later this year, but sales will not begin until 2021. The original parts will ship to all authorized Toyota dealerships in Europe and the USA.
While noteworthy, the practice is not unique; for example, Lamborghini, Land Rover, and Mazda have similar programs running.
