Could this Toyota Supra test car pack a new engine?

The mysterious sports coupe has recently been sighted at the Nürburgring – and judging by its sound profile, it was definitely not the usual A90 Supra.

The fifth generation of the Toyota Supra may be still young, but it received an update back in February that raised its output from 340 to 388 horsepower (254 – 289 kW), just like its technical sibling the BMW Z4 M40i.

However, the engine sound in the video does not resemble the B58 both come equipped with. Instead, the alleged new Supra version might be harboring an S58 inline-six under the hood, the same mill that powers the BMW X3 M, X4 M and the new M3/M4. In its Competition guise, the unit churns out 510 hp (380 kW) and 650 Nm (480 lb-ft) of torque, taking the car from standstill to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.9 seconds.

The company has made no official comment so far. BMW M CEO Markus Flasch said last summer that the manufacturer was not interested in supplying third-party automakers like Toyota with their performance engines. He did not rule out the possibility completely, though. The last time BMW did something similar was in the 1990s, when the McLaren F1 debuted with the BMW S70 V12 under the hood.

Should the Toyota Supra land with the S58 after all, it would most likely be named “Supra GRMN” and emerge in a strictly limited series. The previous-gen Yaris GRMN hit the showrooms across Europe in mere 400 units, for example.
