Following a series of teasers featuring a unique Targa-bodied A90 Supra, Toyota has finally unveiled it on official terms.
The previous – A80 – generation of the iconic sports car came out in 1993 through 2002 and had a removable-top version, which was particularly popular in North America. Starting in 1996, all supercharged Supras for that market shipped exclusively in the Targa body. Despite the popularity, the fifth-gen Supra A90, which is technically related to the BMW Z4, only received the same body variant now – and only as a SEMA design study at this point.
Motorsports Garage enlisted the help of U.S. tuning shops to build the one-off Toyota GR Supra Sport Top closely based on the Supra Heritage Edition Concept. The vehicle landed with A80 brake lights, a rear wing, an original body kit, and a 500HP (373kW) upgrade for the stock BMW B58 engine. The rear suspension is new, and the exhaust tips now protrude from the middle section of the rear bumper.
The new roof consists of dual composite panels that can only be installed and removed manually. With the top on, the Supra Sport Top is virtually identical to the production car. The rear half of the roof and the windshield frame have been reinforced, and additional reinforcements were put under the bottom. The cabin stayed stock.
The manufacturer says nothing about whether the Sport Top ever hits production or not.
