Yet another exciting video by CarWOW sees two modern Toyota Supra GRs race an older A80. All three pack powerful turbocharged engines, automatic transmissions and all-wheel-drive.
The fifth-gen duo comes with a BMW engine under the hood mated to a ZF eight-speed auto gearbox. The white car has a 2.0-liter B48 I4 installed with 258 PS (254 hp / 190 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) at the output end. The red one benefits from a B58 I6 rated at 340 PS (335 hp / 250 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft). The former weighs in at 1,395 kg (3,075 lbs) and the latter is 100 kg (220 lbs) heavier than that. The former costs £46,000 and the latter £7,000 more.
Despite having been designed a quarter of a century before, the fourth-gen Supra A80 is barely inferior to its modern counterparts. Its 3.0-liter 2JZ-GTE inline-six hits the wheels with 320 PS (316 hp / 235 kW) and 441 Nm (326 lb-ft) through a four-speed transmission. There is no launch control, and prices in Great Britain start as low as £27,000 for a used example.
In the quarter-mile runs that followed, the difference barely amounted to a half second. Most other results also proved comparable. As expected, the old Supra held its own against its modern successors even in stock form and with a dated transmission.
