If you think this Toyota Supra looks stupid, you are on to something: the clownish long-tailed coupe will participate in the Funny Car Race of the 2022 NHRA tournament.
The first stage of the race will take place in Pomona, California, in February 2022. Insofar as possible, the Supra Funny Car is stock except for a rather over-the-top set of fake bodywork. This includes an ultra-long nose and ultra-low side skirts, as well as a rear end that defies sensible description.
The NHRA Funny Car competition category requires all participant funny cars to use an 8.2-liter V8 with forced induction for propulsion.
“Our team at TRD (Toyota Racing Development) along with the design team at Calty worked hard to incorporate as many features from the production GR Supra into the Funny Car that J.R. Todd and Alexis DeJoria will drive in 2022,” said Paul Doleshal of Toyota Motor North America.
The year 2022 will mark two decades of Toyota participating in the NHRA racing series. Its team has so far claimed 137 victories in Top Fuel races and 43 in Funny Car races.
