Elderly Toyota Supra sells for more than a new Porsche

A fourth-gen, heavily used Toyota Supra sold for $74,778 in the United States this weekend, surpassing the price of a new entry-spec Porsche 718 Cayman by roughly $10,000.

The sports car had 251,000 kilometers (156,000 miles) under its belt after 25 years of use. It was in remarkably good condition for that kind of mileage, barring small body defects like dents, paint damage and panel gaps. The interior and the drivetrain also needed attention, because the owner has never performed a complete maintenance.

Back in 2010 and 2011, the Supra had its steering rack and hydraulic steering pump replaced. It received new shock absorbers five years ago and a new HVAC fan motor the last year. The seller said he put more than a half of its total mileage on the car.

As for the selling price, much of it can be explained by the ‘proper’ drivetrain parameters. Unlike the vast majority of old Supras surviving to our days, the example on sale had a stock 2JZ GTE twin-turbo six-pot connected to an equally stock six-speed manual transmission.
