Toyota shows off a quartet of racecars doing stunts

Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division has posted a video called Wild Moment to summarize the motorsports season of 2023. It has then followed up with a behind-the-scenes vid explaining how the stunts were filmed.

The stunt footage is taken from a variety of this year’s events and stars the GR Yaris Rally1 hot hatch, the GR010 prototype endurance racer, a track-only GR Supra build, and the GR DKR Hilux T1+ pickup made for the Dakar Rally.

Apprently, in order to film the Yaris jump scene, a 70cm (27.4-inch) tall ramp was erected and the camera car had to be driven in parallel to the Yaris at the same exact speed. For the Supra stunt, Toyota looked for a track section with a tall curb and dug a remote-controlled camera into the earth nearby. The filming crew then had to experiment around with various tire pressure, trajectory and speed combos until they found one that worked for the video.

The main goal of the prototype racer episode was not just to tell the audience about the technical challenges of modern racing, but also to showcase the superior aerodynamic performance of the car. To accomplish this, Toyota dowsed a real racetrack section with a sprinkler to boast about the superior downforce.

The pickup air leap scene was filmed at an actual desert dune and involved a high-end quadcopter. In every case, the filming team had to shoot multiple takes before they got everything right: the vid highlights this fact as inevitable.
