The Hyundai Santa Cruz and its only rival to far – the Ford Maverick – have joined efforts to bring back the compact pickup truck market, which has not been a thing in the USA for at least a decade. Now, Toyota wants its slice of the metaphorical pie.
Speaking in a recent interview, Toyota VP Jack Hollis hinted that there was room in the lineup for a compact-sized pickup. The big question is just what kind of car it is going to be, though.
It is perhaps worth remembering that back in the time, Toyota used to dominate the compact truck segment, and its first-gen Tacoma model (see the photos and the video) was once a vivid example of one. the only thing that can prevent the company from resurrecting that model today is the stricter environmental standards, so it remains open what kind of powertrain the next small truck from Toyota may get.
