Report: Toyota working on a racing-capable Tundra version

The Drive cites insiders claiming that Toyota intends to participate in rally racing with a hardcore Tundra pickup that it also plans to sell as the rival of the Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 and Ford F-150 Raptor. The launch date is not set yet.

According to this unofficial report, the new Tundra will be built based on the TRD Pro spec and the Tundra Desert Chase Concept that debuted at the latest SEMA show (see the gallery for a closer look).

It looks like the truck should debut with 37-inch off-road tires and a long-travel suspension system complete with reinforcements and upgrades shocks. Exterior mods are inevitable, too, and we expect as least some kind of heavy-duty bumpers and wheel arch extensions. The insider mentions a roll bar for the truck bed, which may be offered as a paid option.

Technical details remain unannounced. The latest Toyota Tundra TRD Pro uses a hybrid powertrain called i-Force Max to drive the wheels with 443 PS (437 hp / 326 kW) and 790 Nm (583 lb-ft) of torque. We are told that the first truck will debut at an unspecified racing event where it will compete in the overall ranking.
