Toyota Yaris Mk4 hits market in Europe with 2WD, hybrid version

The fourth generation of the Toyota Yaris finally reaches Europe today, nine months after the initial launch. There is a hybrid spec for those interested, but no AWD and only one available gasoline engine in most countries.

The engine in question is a 1.5-liter three-cylinder unit rated at 125 hp (93 kW) and 153 Nm (113 lb-ft) of torque. Coupled with a six-speed manual gearbox, it takes the hatchback from zero to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in nine seconds flat. You may opt for a CVT box instead, which raises the sprint time to 10.2 s. Top speed amounts to 180 km/h (112 mph) in both cases.

The hybrid car uses the same engine downplayed to 92 hp (70 kW) and 120 Nm (90 lb-ft), but an electric motor assists it with 80 hp (60 kW) and 141 Nm (104 lb-ft) of its own. Their mixed output amounts to 116 hp (87 kW). The car sprints in 9.7 seconds and maxes out at 175 km/h (108 mph). WLTP-rated mixed-cycle fuel consumption is 3.7 liters per 100 kilometers (76 MPG in Great Britain), and CO2 emissions are 85 g/km.

The other Yaris spec, a 1.0-liter three-cylinder with 72 hp (54 kW) and 93 Nm (69 lb-ft) of torque, is only available in select countries.

The TNGA GA-B platform the model is based upon dictates the use of McPherson struts on the front axle, as well as a semi-dependent axle and drum brakes at the rear end. The outer dimensions are: L 3,940 mm, W 1,745 mm, H 1,500 mm, WB 2,560 mm. Wheels are available in 15, 16 and 17 inch sizes. The trunk capacity is 286 liters.

Inside, there is a small display squeezed in between the analog instruments, as well as a central display measuring only eight inches across. A 10-inch color HUD and 8-channel JBL audio are both paid options.

The Yaris is Toyota’s first production car with a central airbag. It also takes advantage of the Toyota Safety Sense package, including AEB, ACC, lane control, auto high beam, as well as recognition of traffic signs, pedestrians and cyclists.

Onnaing factory in Valenciennes, France, assembles the EU-spec Yaris using hybrid components imported from Poland.
