Tuners turn a GR Yaris into a viable 911 GT3 rival with bargain bin mods

Here is a Yaris that will not shun from a drag race against some of the mightiest spots cars out there, even though it costs a small fraction of what they do.

Powertune Australia carried out the tuning, initially managing to squeeze 435 PS (429 hp / 320 kW) out of the stock 1.6-liter three-cylinder turbo. It was a radical improvement over the original’s already impressive 272 PS (268 hp / 200 kW), but the team decided to work some more and see what would happen.

The stock fuel pump proved the biggest bottleneck, so they swapped it out for a much better performing one and replaced the surge tank while they were at it. A careful calibration that followed culminated in the Yaris happily pumping out 478 PS (471 hp / 352 kW) to the hubs, suggesting that the output at the crank was north of 550 horsepower.

But our favorite part is that most of the components were allowed to stay stock, including pistons, connecting rods, valves, gaskets, distribution shafts, the block, and the heads.

What could be the world’s angriest GR Yaris will hit the drag strip soon, and is expected to do a quarter-mile in under ten seconds.
