Toyota has added the GR Yaris to a new OEM tuning program that enables drivers in Japan to opt for a complex software upgrade adding 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) of torque and improving overall throttle response.
The Japan-spec GR Yaris utilizes a 1.6-liter turbo mill rated at 272 PS (268 hp / 200 kW) and 370 Nm (273 lb-ft) of torque. Paying a rough equivalent of 1,000 USD extra gets you to 390 Nm (288 lb-ft) at the same power. More importantly, though, the entire throttle response curve is improved this way with the peak torque accessible between 3,200 and 4,000 RPM, a much wider window than before.
As well, buyers of the GR Yaris can request tweaks affecting per-axle distribution of torque and handling. The list includes a total of 27 settings drivers in Japan can customize to match their preferences perfectly. Toyota stresses that a consultation with a drivetrain specialist is required before ordering to make sure there is a clear understanding of the details.
