Hydrogen Vehicle Systems, a carmaker founded in Glasgow six years ago, previewed a concept of a semi-truck running on fuel cell technology. The unnamed semi is envisioned with over 500 km (310 miles) of highway range when loaded to capacity (40 metric tons, or 88,000 lbs).
The production start date remains to be announced. The company says it chose fuel cells instead of batteries thanks to their superior range and faster refills. In addition to these, the truck features an energy storage compartment and supports regenerative braking.
Most other parameters remain secret. The startup is designing its own, proprietary platform for the model and promises class-leading fuel efficiency and powertrain life.
The sleek cab has two seats installed inside with enhanced lateral support and a large display in front of the passenger.
Hydrogen Vehicle Systems aims to become the first British company to launch production of hydrogen-based commercial transports. It believes that zero-emission trucks will play a pivotal role in the decarbonization of logistics.
