Video: Bloggers investigate the mystery of an EV landfill in China

The YouTube team of Inside China Auto has traveled to the rumored location of a large electric car graveyard to confirm certain rumors. Earlier reports claimed that automakers had been stockpiling unsold new EVs there, but the investigation revealed that all cars belonged to a now-bankrupt company.

Specifically, rumors had been circulating in China for a while that certain electric car manufacturers overestimated the demand for EVs and had to get rid of up to 10,000 vehicles that they produced but couldn’t sell. The YouTubers traveled to the site of the alleged ‘EV graveyard’ only to discover that it wasn’t nearly as large as the reports claimed. Furthermore, most vehicles were in used condition with visible traces of long-term use on them.

They were then able to establish that the entire fleet belonged to a now-defunct ride sharing company that went bankrupt. As painful as it can be to see hundreds of electric cars standing out in the open decaying slowly, the host of the video points out that most of them are primitive low-end models with very limited driving range.
