Video: Here’s how a self-driving car reacts to a blown wheel

Kodiak Robotics has shared some test footage featuring an autonomous truck equipped with emergency response tech reacting to such unforeseen situations as a sudden flat tire.

The truck was tested on a proving ground with an obstacle that punctured its tire when driven over. The test crew of two people in the cabin did not participate in driving in any way, only registering real-time data for future reference.

The car hit the obstacle at 35 mph (56 km/h), losing one of its tires in the process. According to Kodiak Robotics, in similar situations large trucks often slide to the curb or, worse, into the opposite lane. The self-driving system, however, reacted quickly and was able to keep the vehicle in lane until it was able to stop completely.
