Vintage Delahaye convertible reveals royal heritage, rises 20x in price over 3 months

A 72-year-old Delahaye 180 with a body built by Franay is currently being traded for U.S. $7,500,000 after changing hands for just $318,500 in August. The current price is hard to attribute to rarity alone, but the seller claims they were able to track back the history of the vehicle – and found kings and princes down that road.

Back when RM Sotheby’s sold this cabriolet three months ago, the auction holder did voice the assumption that Mohammed V, King of Morocco, was its first owner, but there was no documental evidence to support that claim. The evidence has now been found.

Apparently, Mohammed V of Morocco used the vehicle until 1961 when his son ascended to the throne. Later on, the seller believes, it went on to be owned by French Army generals, princes and sultans until settling down in a private collection some 33 years ago. It has been restored twice in its life, but the true mileage is unknown.
