All-electric Volkswagen ID.3 gathers 20,000 pre-orders

Jurgen Stackmann, CEO of Volkswagen AG, said the company has received over 20,000 pre-orders for the battery-powered ID.3 hatchback.

The nature-friendly vehicle only debuted a month ago. Despite the heavy camo wrap covering it, more than 10,000 orders came in within 24 hours. The number has doubled since, and the company expects it to triple by the time the 2019 International Motor Show Germany launches.

The Volkswagen ID.3 will ship in three range versions: 45 kWh (enough for 330 kilometers or 205 miles or range when fully charged), 58 kWh (420 km / 261 mi), and 77 kWh (550 km / 342 mi).

However, what is currently available to pre-order is a launch edition. Called the ID.3 1ST, it comes with a few distinguishing features, such as four paint schemes to choose from, three interior trim variants, and a high-end infotainment system with voice support.

First shipments won’t happen until at least the summer of 2021, the company warns.
