VW ID. Crozz coupe-SUV loses the ‘coupe’ part going into production

Volkswagen originally showed us its new coupe-SUV – the ID. Crozz Concept – in 2017. The prototype vehicle was exhibited at the Shanghai Motor Show and the IMS Germany. Today, car spotters sent us first spy pics of the production car, and it no longer has the characteristic sloped roof.

As such, what we have here is a classical-looking crossover SUV reminiscent of the ID.3 hatchback, but larger. The ID. Crozz Concept measured 4,625 mm (15.17 ft.) long, 1,891 mm (6.2 ft.) wide and 1,609 mm (5.28 ft.) tall with a wheelbase spanning 2,773 mm (9.1 ft.). These dimensions fit neatly into the niche between the latest Volkswagen Tiguan and its LWB version, the Allspace.

Some may find the coupe-SUV body style more to their liking, but there is little denying the fact that the classical SUV is more practical, especially in terms of headroom available for the rear passengers.

That said, we could spot a few other disappointing design simplifications. For instance, the concept car had sliding rear doors and rear view cameras, while the test mule has conventional doors and mirrors.

The ID. Crozz Concept still doesn’t have a production name. It shares its chassis and tech with the upcoming Audi Q4 e-tron and Cupra crossover SUV. All three will likely ship with the same powertrain configuration: namely, a front-axle mounted motor with 102 hp (76 kW) and 140 Nm (101 lb-ft) of torque and a rear-axle motor with 204 hp (152 kW) and 310 Nm (229 lb-ft). The resulting total performance will therefore amount to 306 hp (228 kW). Fitted with a 83 kWh battery, all three will offer around 450 kilometers (280 miles) of driving range.

Production will begin in 2020.
