VW Atlas Cross Sport debuts in the USA

Volkswagen has unveiled the coupe version of its Atlas SUV, called the Atlas Cross Sport, in the USA. Reportedly, North America will be the key market for the model, even though the car is already available in China.

The car shares its wheelbase (2,980 mm / 9.78 ft.) and body width (1,988 mm / 6.52 ft.) with the SUV while being somewhat shorter and less tall. The roofline has changed, as did the rear end. Overall, the contours have taken on a more dynamic appearance, and the pillars are now more reclining than before.

The third seat row has been thrown out in favor of a larger trunk area. The trunk volume normally amounts to 1,142 liters (40.33 cubic feet), but can be expanded to 2,203 liters (77.8 cubic feet) if you fold the back seats.

Aside from the sportier silhouette, the newcomer also boasts revised bumpers, radiator grille, headlights and hood, as well as a few additional chrome touches. Options include larger wheels (up to 21”) and the R Limne package. The Atlas Cross Sport is also Volkswagen’s first car ever to bear the new VW R badge.

Inside, the steering wheel and the trim is new, and more options are available in higher trim versions. These include digital dashboard, 12-speaker audio, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, wireless charging, and a variety of driver aids. All in all, the coupe-shaped SUV will ship in eight different trim levels in the USA.

The engine range remains unchanged. Customers may still choose between a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbo unit rated at 235 hp (175 kW) and a naturally aspirated V6 with 280 hp (209 kW). FWD and AWD are both available, and the transmission type is eight-speed automatic in all versions.

Production will take place in the VW factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee – the same one where the regular Atlas is being produced.
