Volkswagen AG said last fall that it was planning to release a new minivan/MPV primarily aimed at the China market. In September, rumor emerged that the car would be called Viloran. This is confirmed now, and the first teaser images are already here.
The Volkswagen Viloran will celebrate its official premiere at the Auto Guangzhou expo launching on November 22, 2019. Its looks designed similarly to the Touareg SUV and comes based on the MQB architecture. Measuring 5.1 meters (16.73 feet) long, it is larger than the latest-gen VW Sharan with its 4.95 m (16.25 feet). It will likely ship in five- and seven-seat versions, but we also expect a six-seat one with a 2+2+2 seating formula, which is typical for the Chinese market.
The MPV will come powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine pushing out 220 hp (164 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque in conjunction with a DSG transmission. Whether AWD will be available as a paid option remains unknown.
The production will take place at the VW/SAIC joint enterprise in China. Volkswagen has another joint venture there – the VW/FAW factory. The latter might soon start producing a Viloran-based large crossover SUV series inspired by the SMV Concept the company revealed at the 2019 Auto Shanghai show.
