The desert SUV is decidedly one of the more interesting Los Angeles show reveals. Unless we’re mistaken, it also uses its own, custom chassis design, despite the misleading ‘Atlas’ moniker.
Tech specs are scarce: we are told that the 2.0-liter V4 comes boosted to 480 hp (358 kW) for an optimal balance between power and stability. VW claims that, in theory, you could get 600 hp (447 kW) out of the same mill.
The reason for building the extreme off-roader is simple: Volkswagen AG dreams of a rally comeback, and this Atlas Cross Sport R might take part in the upcoming Baja 1000. Ford is sending its Bronco-inspired buggy there, so VW probably feels like it needs to respond.
