Volkswagen AG is getting its all-electric crossover vehicle – the ID.4 – ready to roll off the assembly lines. Inexplicably, it has chosen an Opel body for the tests.
This means we cannot make any conclusions regarding the appearance of the upcoming SUV. Chances are good that it will look similar to the ID Crozz Concept shown on the video here, while based on the MEB architecture used by the ID.3 e-hatchback. This architecture supports two primary drivetrain configurations: single engine (RWD) and dual engines (AWD). The test mule seems to be packing the latter, which would explain why it rides on snow where the shortcomings of AWD systems are the easiest to see.
In all likelihood, the ID.4 will ship with two battery sizes: 62 kWh and 82 kWh. The recently revealed ID Space Vizzion Concept packed a 82-kWh battery that enabled it to cover around 480 kilometers (300 miles) on a single charge.
The Volkswagen ID.4 should launch in the second half of 2020.
