VW proposes mobile robots for EV charging purposes

Volkswagen Group Components has found a way to simplify the charging routine for your electric car. Interested?

The company has come up with a charging station concept involving autonomously moving robots with equipped charger modules. Like any other self-driving vehicle, every such robot packs a number of cameras, lasers, radars, and ultrasonic sensors to find its way around. The routine sounds simple enough: the robot saves up a certain amount of energy, drives up to your car, plugs the charger in and moves on to the other customers. Once the charging is complete, it comes back and removes the charger plug.

Components says it can develop a dedicated mobile app where users will be able to order a robot to come by and charge their EV. That said, the company could make the process automatic: whenever the robot learns that your car runs low on battery (using the V2X network interface), it will move out at once to top it up.
