Volkswagen ID.5 pilot batch hits production

VW Saxony has reported the production start of the ID.5 at the factory in Zwickau, Germany. The electric SUV-coupe will first emerge in a limited test batch and should reach the mass market in the second half of the year.

The car is largely identical to the ID.4 except for the slanted roof. While its specs remain to be officially confirmed, they will likely be the same or similar. The ID.4 comes with two battery sizes (52 and 77 kWh) and multiple rear motor power ratings (148–204 PS, which corresponds to 146–201 hp and 109–150 kW). An AWD spec capable of 306 PS (302 hp / 225 kW) will debut soon. Prices in Germany begin at €36,950; the ID.5 should be a fair bit more expensive than that.

The ID.5 is the third VW MEB-based vehicle produced in Zwickau after the ID.3 and ID.4. A year later, it will be accompanied by technically similar cars from other brands, specifically the Audi Q4 e-tron/Q4 Sportback e-tron and the Cupra el-Born. On an interesting side note, the ID.5 will not be available in the United States, even though the ID.4 already is and will be produced locally starting next year.

A minivan named the ID.7 will break cover in 2022, followed by the Aero sedan and Aero B wagon a year after that (names unconfirmed; some say both will be named ID.6). Compact-sized ID.1 and ID.2 models should follow in 2024 and 2025. China has its own localized models named the ID.4 X and ID.4 Crozz, and will be getting an ID.6 X later this year, which is a production car based on the ID. Roomzz Concept.
