Volkswagen sheds light on Project Trinity

Media learned at the beginning of the year that Volkswagen had a flagship in development under the codename ‘Project Trinity’. A teaser came out in March, and now we finally have some specifics to report.

The Project Trinity will be among the German automaker’s first vehicles to make use of a new chassis known as the SSP (Scalable Systems Platform). Its body style is being described as something in between of a hatchback, a sedan, and an SUV.

Like the Tesla or the Taycan, the car will ship with unlockable software features. Volkswagen will install all the required hardware at the factory, but activating certain features will necessitate paying for an over-the-air update.

The Trinity (which may be not its final production name) will debut with a Level 2 self-driving system on board. Later versions should eventually take it to Level 4 autonomy, which means drivers will be able to go hands-free most of the time.

Finally yet importantly, despite its flagship status, the car should start relatively low at around €35,000. Sales should begin in five years.
