VW ID.2 gets 25% more expensive years ahead of launch

The Volkswagen ID.2 compact crossover SUV scheduled to reach the mass market in 2025 will start from at least €25,000, as opposed to the earlier estimation of €20,000, CEO Thomas Schaefer said in an interview to Electrified. The reason? Rising production costs.

Schaefer emphasized that going back to the previously quoted price point would be possible if the suppliers find a way to cut costs on their side. Another interesting thing to note in the interview is that this was the first time a Volkswagen executive explicitly referred to the production car based on the ID.Life Concept as ‘ID.2’. Turns out the rumors about the nameplate were right.

The VW ID.2 is destined to reach the showrooms in three years and phase out the Polo model. It will be closely related in terms of powertrain and tech to the Cupra Urban rebel, powered by a single front-mounted electric motor capable of 234 PS (231 hp / 172 kW). A 57-kh traction battery is expected to give it around 400 kilometers (250 miles) of range.
