The XL Sport Concept you see here never reached production, but recent reports suggest that Volkswagen might still be interested in releasing a sports car like it on an electric platform.
In its latest press release, the company said it was developing an all-new electric drivetrain. Aside from experimenting with motor and battery designs, VW was apparently also focusing on invertors and temperature control solutions.
The release emphasized that any new drivetrain elements designed would only make their way into the next generation of EVs and not the current one. This next generation will be based on the latest revision of the MEB platform. Wrapping up the report, the automaker explicitly said that it was considering the launch of an all-electric sports car making use of innovative power cell tech. If greenlit for production, the model would get at least 680 PS (671 hp / 500 kW) of power.
