Volkswagen is reportedly in negotiations with multiple car companies right now concerning the development of a truly affordable electric car, Handelsblatt (Germany) reports. The goal is to produce an EV capable of competing with cheap Chinese models. Automotive News Europe believes it could start as low as €20,000.
According to these unofficial sources, the talks between VW and Renault are still in their early stages and may never come to fruit. Still, it is undeniable that both automakers need a low-budget electric vehicle that they would be able to sell 200,000–250,000 units of every year.
The German automotive giant announced a €25,000 electric vehicle in March this year. The company said it would be able to replenish its charge from 10 to 80 percent in around 20 minutes and cover up to 450 km (280 miles) on a charge. A €20,000 EV has also been mentioned, but without any further details.
